“Wendy’s at Stell's. I know it in my gut.” Pepper’s working out on a rowing machine in the headquarters gym, sweat dripping off her chin and down her neck. The muscles of her back and shoulders, visible under her tank top, still bear definition from her days as a competitive swimmer. I'm reclining motionless on the seat of a recumbent bicycle, drinking a latté and eating a bagel. It’s 7:30 in the morning. Pepper’s been exercising for nearly an hour. She keeps urging me to work out, get in shape, promising the rewards in energy are worth the effort. She offers to design a program for me. I wonder if she’s been talking to my mother who thinks I'd make a more beautiful bride if I lost five pounds and tightened up a little. She too offers to share her very own custom-made exercise plan, developed specifically for her by the fitness trainer at her senior living facility. So far as she’s ever said, his only known qualification is that he is really a “hunk.”

“She's not at her mother's, you've already been there. Her old man’s in jail. Where else would she be?” Pepper stands, mops at her face and hair with a towel. “Give me a minute to jump in the shower. Then let's hop over to Mateo Park and pay Miss Stell a visit. I'll bet you ten bucks we find Wendy.” She stops on her way to the locker room. “You alright? You don’t look so good; you’re a little green around the gills.”

That’s an apt description. I hardly slept at all last night. I hate fighting with Frank. He’s right. I know he’s right. I will have to tell Pepper about Badger’s letters. Just not today. I can’t explain my reticence. Clinical intuition maybe, but something makes me want to hold off, see what happens. Maybe this goes away. Maybe it doesn’t. Maybe Pepper can use Badger’s search for his son as leverage to get him to confess to Jerry’s murder. But not today. Not when she’s this amped up and Wendy is still missing and possibly in danger.
